| What to Expect During the Consultation
The purpose of the consultation is to determine candidacy for the LASIK
procedure, as well as to explain the procedure in detail, and answer any questions. During
the consultation, we perform a thorough eye exam, which usually includes the following:
- Medical and Ocular History
- Refraction-measuring the eyeglass prescription
- Lensometry - computerized reading of current glasses prescription
- Tonometry - measure of intra-ocular pressure (glaucoma check)
- Pupil Diameter (in dim light and bright light)
- Visual Acuity - vision check with and without glasses
Manifest Refraction - determination of refractive error without dilation drops
- Cycloplegic Refraction - determination of refractive error done with dilation drops
- Ocular Examination
- Anterior Segment (front of the eye-lids), conjunctiva, cornea, lens
- Posterior Segment (back of the eye) - retina
This complete exam generally lasts about 1 1/2 hours. As a result of the dilation drops,
reading vision may be blurry for a few hours, and there will be an increase in light
sensitivity. We offer an eyedrop to help reverse the dilation, but the pupils will remain
large, and the vision somewhat blurry for some time.
Prior to the consultation, we ask patients to discontinue the use of contact lens; 7
days for soft lenses, 4 weeks for gas permeable, and 6 weeks for hard lenses. These lenses
change the shape of the cornea, and affect our ability to take accurate measurements.
Following the examination, Dr. Mitchell will discuss whether or not refractive surgery
is an option for your eyes and vision. |
